AQA

Year 12

Year 13

This is a Linear course taught over two years.

A level English language provides a fresh perspective in the language that surrounds us each and every day.  Over the course of the year we study a variety of topics including:

       Linguistic methods and text analysis;

       Language and gender;

       Language and occupation;

       Language diversity and how social contexts influence our language;

       Language change (1600-present day);

       Language acquisition.

All students will learn the metalanguage of linguistics which means by the end of the first year of study they will have the skills and confidence to analyse the many functions of language.

The A level exam involves three components:

  1. Language, the individual and society; (exam) 40%

  1. Language diversity and change; (exam 40%)

  1. Language in action. Non exam assessment (20%).

Year 13 builds on the knowledge acquired in Year 12.

We look at how we acquire language and the debates surrounding this.  We also study language diversity and changing attitudes and opinions towards language.

The Non Exam Assessment is an independent piece of work; students choose their area of investigation with guidance from their teacher.
