THE CURRICULUM MODEL 2020-2021

The Overview

The challenge for School improvement is to continue to find a broad and balanced curriculum that raises achievement and attainment while taking advantage of government directives and balancing this advice with opportunities to personalise the curriculum with valued worthwhile courses that have progression routes. 

The curriculum gives priority to Religious Education, the core subjects at Key Stage 3 ( English, Maths, Science) and the foundation subjects ( Art and Design, D&T, Geography, History, Computing, Music, PE, Languages and PSME).  At Key Stage 4, the core (RE, English, Maths, Science).  Students are encouraged and given a large amount of advice and guidance when selecting their options to ensure the EBacc subjects form part of their choice, where appropriate.

This year we will continue with the model of a 3 year Key Stage 3 and a 2 year Key Stage 4. However within core subjects of RE, Maths, English and Science, pathways begin at an earlier stage, with linear progression from Year 7.

Computing at Key Stage 3 has replaced ICT and there are clear areas that students will study and be assessed on.  We have two pathways for students in Key Stage 4 with a GCSE in Computer Science and also a BTEC in ICT.  At Key Stage 5, we offer a BTEC Level 3 ICT.

The curriculum will continue to offer all our students their first choice of option subjects as this has a positive impact on their behaviour and academic standards. However, we will continue to give guided support to students and parents about the relevance of E. Bacc programme.

PSHE remains a mandatory element of the National Curriculum at both Key Stage 3 and 4. This year it is 1 lesson per fortnight in year 7 and 8, delivered by a team of staff. For Years 9, 10 and 11 PSHE will be delivered through a programme of extended tutorials and assemblies and planned programme of year days.  There is also a whole school conference day that covers wide areas of the PSHE curriculum for all years.

Vocational Education is an essential part of a broad curriculum and we continue to offer BTECs both pre and post 16.

The impact of raising participation to 18 is a continued focus for planning.  The changes to A’Levels have now been embedded.  Assessment schedules and points are planned at the beginning of the year so that each department can plan their curriculum delivery.  The decision has been made that all Year 12 students will sit an internal full assessment in all subjects at the end of Year 12.  This decision was taken after careful consideration and the impact of the withdrawal of external AS exams.
The Year 12 curriculum has enabled us to develop a cohesive enrichment programme on Wednesdays.

Any student who does not gain a grade 4 in either GCSE English or Mathematics will have timetabled lessons to support their resits in these qualifications.

The Catholic life and spiritual development of students Post 16 is a priority. The core RS programme continues to be re-focused with lessons designed by the RS department and delivered in a programme throughout the year.  Core RS is delivered through the Extended Project Qualification and is taken by all students.

In Year 7 students are divided into 2 bands A & B. Each band is divided into 2 and 3 groups (respectively) based on tutor groups. However, PE and DT are split into 3 in A Band and 4 in B Band. Maths is split into 5 groups to allow setting.

PSHE is delivered in mixed ability tutor groups which allows opportunity for whole school delivery and a focus on the PSHE curriculum.

 

DT and Computing are taught in a carousel.

Groupings are similar to Year 7.  However, Spanish is introduced in Year 8.  Students all study French and Spanish.  English and Maths groups are on at the same time to enable setting to occur.  PSHE continues to be taught in discrete lessons to mixed ability tutor groups. 

 

Science is set in both bands.

In Year 9 setting takes place in Maths across the whole year group and in RE, English and Science, within each band. 

To support MFL, students study French and Spanish (3 and 4 hours respectively).  Alternatively, students for whom Polish is appropriate can study Polish entirely (7 hours) or may choose to study Polish plus either Spanish or French.

In Year 10, students have the choice of 3 option subjects. 

The blocks are created through demand and resources.  This year, Core PE has 2 hours per fortnight.  Triple Science is done within the Science allocation, so students do not need to take it as an option.

For a very small number of students, there is a BTEC Work Skills qualification that may take the place of one option.  In addition, for a very small number of students, students will take Functional Skills, rather than one option.

Options consist mainly of GCSE qualifications, but there are a small number of BTEC courses.  These are Construction, Childcare, IMedia and Work Skills.  Students have the opportunity to choose Computer Science, a language (French, Spanish or Polish) and humanity (History or Geography).

Students go through a lengthy advice and guidance process to ensure that they have selected the most appropriate courses for their ability and career path. 

In Year 11, students continue with their option courses.

Throughout Years 10 and 11, there are a number of PSHE times allocated that meet the needs of students. Much of this is delivered during tutor time, however, there are occasions when the timetable is collapsed when visiting speakers are in school.  Topics covered include Independent Living, Health, GCSEs and Beyond and SRE.  These are also covered in the Conference Day, which is held for all students every July.

In Year 12, students are currently advised to pick only 3 A’ Level Qualifications.  These will continue into Year 13. 

Enrichment takes place on Wednesday afternoons.

Resit Maths and English are offered to any students who do not gain a 4 or above at GCSE.
